About this deal

Glyn Johns’ autobiography, Sound Man, is a treasure trove of recording stories for pros and rock fans.

In his autobiography, Glyn Johns recounts that at the age of eight he joined a local church choir as a boy soprano.Glyn was the first recording engineer who helped me to understand recording and through that he was very supportive in introducing me to a lot of sessions with important people such as Ben Sidren, Leon Russell, Ronnie Lane, Pete Townshend and Howling Wolf. It may be that he wanted to keep the focus solely on his singular career and the abundance of characters he crossed paths with but it leaves the book feeling a bit incomplete. I'd interviewed his son, Ethan Johns, in 2005; Glyn and I began talking about him, as Ethan had just been by the day before. He only cut several singles as a solo artist (in the 1960s) and did not make any albums in that capacity.

It’s mostly a book filled with unlikely adventures that resulted from being in the right place (recording studios) at the right time (1960’s-‘70’s and to a lesser degree beyond those decades). Every now and then, when the opportunity presented itself, I would try to “express my opinion more convincingly than anyone else,” and there were a few who took notice. Johns later went on to record for Pye Records [22] and Immediate Records, [23] but none of his solo records became hits. He has continued to work with contemporary artists like Band of Horses, Ryan Adams and even assisted new recordings by the Rolling Stones.

This man has been on the inside of some of the most influential music of one of the most influential times for music. He was working with the Stones as early as 1962, recorded George Harrison’s solo demo of “Something” when Harrison was too worried to play the song live for the rest of the band, and recorded the first Led Zeppelin album in nine days. He received an Award for Musical Excellence and was honoured for his work on landmark recordings by many famous artists.
