In the end, the drama of the linked investigations works so well because McDermid cares about her characters, and Hill and Jordan have a psychological depth that's rare in crime fiction. The Retribution is centered around two problematic crime sprees. The first is a now-familiar series of horrific murders of “working girls” in the Temple Fields (red light/gay ghetto) section of downtown Bradfield. Each of the three killings is quite different from each other but they all have the word “mine” tattooed somewhere on the corpse. It takes awhile for the police to recognize there’s only one killer involved because the bodies are in such different states. However, eventually the police do hand the case over to MIT even though it will likely be the unit’s last case. Carol’s new boss has decided that having a cadre of specialized officers who work on the hardest cases and get good results is “too expensive” so she’s taken a job at West Mercia and her team’s officers will join the regular detective rotation. The Retribution by Val McDermid is the seventh in a series featuring detective Carol Jordan and profiler Tony Hill. In the interest of full disclosure, I won this in a first-reads GR giveaway. However, my review reflects my experience of the book and is not (I don't believe) influenced by this in any way).

Some people who believe in the notion of retribution are against capital punishment because they feel the death penalty provides insufficient retribution. They argue that life imprisonment without possibility of parole causes much more suffering to the offender than a painless death after a short period of imprisonment. They argue that, in the USA at least, only a small minority of murderers are actually executed, and that imposition of capital punishment on a "capriciously selected random handful" of offenders does not amount to a consistent programme of retribution. After reading this and thinking about it for a while, I'm still not entirely sure what I think of it. There was much to enjoy but at times I still felt like throwing the book across the room, a feeling I think would have been much worse had I not been spoiled for the end of the book. Some lawyers argue that capital punishment is not really used as retribution for murder, or even consistently for a particular kind of murder. Many methods of execution are quite obviously likely to cause enormous suffering, such as execution by lethal gas, electrocution or strangulation. But the issue of the execution of innocent persons is also a problem for the retribution argument - if there is a serious risk of executing the innocent then one of the key principles of retribution - that people should get what they deserve (and therefore only what they deserve) - is violated by the current implementation of capital punishment in the USA, and any other country where errors have taken place.
