About this deal

It has a higher refresh rate of 240Hz compared to the ASUS' 170Hz, but the difference might not be noticeable to casual gamers. The default gamma was slightly worse than the 27″ model (which has 5% deviance out of the box) but it was a minor difference. The Samsung Odyssey G70B has fantastic ergonomics, and it's easy to adjust to an ideal viewing position. It is easy enough to obtain a suitable luminance for your working conditions and individual preferences, but a reliable factory setup in gamma, white point and colour accuracy is important and some (gamma especially) are not as easy to change accurately without a calibration tool. Enabling the VRR with Adaptive Sync locks the overdrive mode, but if you're gaming on a source that doesn't support variable refresh rates, the recommended setting is 'Faster'.

For reference we are testing the FB02 version of the screen and have updated to the latest UK/US official firmware v1007. If you like using a black frame insertion feature to improve motion clarity, only the ASUS allows you to use it simultaneously with VRR. The Neo G9 has Mini LED backlighting which provides better control over the local dimming, so it displays deeper and more uniform blacks. The Samsung is better suited for dark rooms because it can produce deeper blacks, and it also gets brighter to combat glare. That first venture in to 240Hz VA was also limited to a 1080p panel and it appeared that this technology was not ready for the jump to 240Hz, and may never be.

It also has a local dimming feature, which the Gigabyte doesn't have, but it doesn't add much because it performs terribly. There is no paper report provided with the screen, and instead the factory calibration report for the unit is built in to the OSD menu which is handy, and a nice feature. However, that is very easily controlled through the brightness setting (on most screens) and should not impact the other areas being measured anyway. You can also enable Game HDR if you want a brighter image, but then the EOTF is too bright, as you can see here.com Services and marketing information, new product and service announcements as well as special offers, events and newsletters.

We did it with different equipment and even with a different way to measure contrast, but we obtained very similar results. The LG is also a bit better in well-lit rooms, as it has slightly better reflection handling and SDR brightness. Also, the Samsung has better motion handling with 60Hz signals, but the LG has lower input lag at 60Hz for a more responsive feel. There is however a slight slope of the edges on the right and left hand side so it looks a little thicker when you view the screen from the front. However, the Samsung has substantially better HDR color gamut and volume, making it a better option if you watch lots of HDR content. The Samsung Odyssey G70B has a mediocre contrast ratio, making blacks look gray next to bright objects.

The Samsung also has substantially greater height adjustment and can be rotated into portrait orientation. Unfortunately, it's disappointing for dark room gaming due to its low contrast, which makes blacks look gray in the dark. cd/m 2 at this default brightness setting, giving us a strong 2031:1 contrast ratio which is an obvious strength of the VA panel technology although quite a bit lower than the specified 2500:1.Despite being a gamer-orientated screen, it was good to see a focus from Samsung here on reliable and accurate setup, as opposed to some gaming screens which have a large gamma deviance and seemingly very little focus on accuracy. On a black image from a side view there is very little glow from the panel, and the deep blacks and strong contrast ratio are still evident. The Samsung also has a more versatile black frame insertion feature, and the stand has better ergonomics with a better height adjustment and can rotate to portrait orientation and swivel. It isn't very bright in HDR, though, so bright highlights don't stand out the way the content creator intended. We didn't notice any of the same flicker issues, but you can still see the same scanline issues with specific test patterns, as seen here.
