The combination of the 7 sprockets on the rear cassette and the 3 chainrings on the crankset is what results in the XC550 having 21 gears (7×3), which is plenty for any cyclist. This helps to slow the bike and significantly improves stopping distances, especially in really wet weather. It’s always difficult to recommend the correct bike frame size for people but generally speaking, the 49cm frame is considered a small frame and would suit adults and children who are around 5′ 0″ to 5′ 6″ (150cm to 165cm), whereas the 54cm frame is a medium size suitable for people around 5′ 6″ to 6′ 0″ (165cm to 180cm).
