About this deal

Each collection compiles a number of short strips, with the early stories following a very set pattern of family-oriented gentle humour. The Talk: When the boys' father comes home, he tries to have a talk about romance and dating with his teenage son.

Again, given how queerphobia and transphobia have made coming out an unfortunate part of many experiences, kids and adolescents need tools and support to navigate on their own, but also safe adults to talk to and guide them to safe resources. I Think Our Son Is Gay delivers an entertaining and feel-good read and the Teen rating means it will make a good addition to the LGBTQIA+ shelf in senior libraries. It's also fine for ungendered languages, but an attempt at translating Hiroki's answer into a gendered language—which includes most European languages—and still sounds natural will be very challenging. A Print Bonus page of Chapter 22 shows Hiroki has this on top of Muscle Angst, as he heard that muscle training may stunt growth. Despite this, he tries to spend as much time as possible with his children during the time he is home.Or So I Heard: When Hiroki realizes he's been telling his mother what he finds attractive in a man, he tries to pass it off as relaying the opinions of the girls in his class. The UK and US have been notorious for ramping up what was already a violent treatment of trans people, and as queer and trans people gain freedoms in some places, they are withdrawn in many others. Il formato più grande di questo volumetto lo rende particolarmente adatto a essere letto anche dagli occhi più affaticati.

Meanwhile, Yuri brings some dry wit to proceedings with his casual putdowns towards his parent’s presumptions about his brother and showing how wise beyond his years he is. This relatively slim volume from Square Enix Manga is the first of three (so far), with a pleasing translation from Leo McDonagh that captures the family conversations around the meal table convincingly and a colour page at the beginning. It’s rough - I feel genuinely bad picking on a book that’s trying so darn hard to be a sweet story and a comedy, but it only gets half the equation correct and the rest is trying but just not there. In another chapter, he mentions finding an athlete attractive and then backpedals, saying he's only relaying what his female classmates think. With Hiroki, Tomoko slowly sees reasons why he may not talk about being gay, while also giving him some room to just be himself regardless of sexual orientation.

I Think Our Son is Gay is a delightful read, though it can hit on some sore spots for me, and I imagine other queer and trans folx. As Hiroki comes home from school every day with new tales of friend Daigo's feats, Tomoko wonders about the future of her eldest's schoolboy crush. But later on she develops helpful strategies for countering Akiyoshi and providing some solace for Hiroki. Manga creator Okura stated on Twitter on October 11 that his manga I Think Our Son Is Gay ( Uchi no Musuko wa Tabun Gay) will not end in the fourth volume, despite several Japanese retailers recently listing that the manga would end in that volume. The art in particular is strongly grounded in the slice-of-life comedy genre with the characters not being highly detailed but still packing plenty of punch thanks to the over-the-top facial expressions and generally cheerful atmosphere.

But nothing can prepare Tomoko for the day Hiroki comes home with a shocker—Daigo's got himself a girlfriend! Because another thing is clear to her: there are reasons why Hiroki may not want to share that he’s gay with anyone, even her. Mình vẫn thích Asumi ฅ This causes some worry on Tomoko's part, but Asumi realizes the truth about Hiroki and is happy to be Just Friends. Real Men Cook: Akiyoshi cooks dinner when he's home from work trips and encourages his sons to learn, though he makes a misstep by saying it's attractive to women, something neither of them care about.Even as the friendship between Hiroki and Daigo undergoes a change and the relationship between Hiroki and kid brother Yuri evolves too, life goes on for the Aoyamas and their loved ones, all under mom Tomoko's caring and supportive eye!

So, that takes me to a manga that gets at some of this reality, though wrapped in wholesome and truly loving family dynamics: I Think Our Son is Gay. No matter how many times I read a book with a loving, supportive Mother, I always feel surprised… and I’m not sure why. It’s also a story of the struggles of coming out to each family member, The chapters with the father resonate particularly, constantly being asked questions about girls, The feeling of inadequacy that comes from the constant pressure of being assumed straight in society! This manga is from the perspective of a loving and gentle mother trying to piece together her son’s sexuality while also working to subtly show her support without giving away what she knows so as to allow him to come out on his own terms. Unlike the norm of that genre, Koi-Men lacks explicit sex scenes and puts more emphasis on gay romance. But now that Hiroki's in his first year of high school, his thoughts are turning ever so slightly to sex and romance.
