About this deal

People lose their minds when a horse that was in the back hits on 2 or 3 consecutive rolls of the dice. As you go from horse 1 to 8 the multipliers increase, representing decreasing odds of that horse crossing the finishing line. At this moment, there are very few ways I’d rather spend 30 minutes of my life than playing Long Shot: The Dice Game. It functions as an interface for your plot and scheming to the macro element of play, a conduit to the greater experience shared at the table.

The dice determine which horses move and the actions available each turn, so be ready to adapt your plans in this game. Long Shot: The Dice Game offers a continuous form of gambling where you wager limited actions for small yet momentous payouts. All the horse art is great, giving you the distinct impression that the horses have their own personalities. However it's worth considering that perhaps watching people play a game doesn't necessarily effectively convey the experience or excitement of playing that game yourself. From placing bets on horses, to manipulating the odds of them moving, you will not be able to get away from the fact that gambling is woven in the DNA of this game.

And it works better for it, keeping the physical size small and portable while the player count is high.

Other options include moving horses of your choice on the track backwards or forward, influencing their chances.Long Shot: The Dice Game, you and up to seven other players will strategize and push your luck as the action unfolds in a tense race of eight horses.

There are several levers to help you advance your favoured contender and if not, well, there are also plenty of chances to back a different horse instead. If you enjoy what I’m doing and want to support my efforts, please consider dropping off a tip at my Ko-Fi or supporting my Patreon. You really need to weigh whether you should throw your money behind a particular horse as everything is open to the table. I never played the original Long Shot which was published in 2009 and the truth is that I didn’t need to. Later on I came across a playthrough of it on youtube and it kind of torpedoed my excitement to pick it up due to how much the video of the play experience seemed to be the opposite vibe that people described. We have this dirt hole of a paddock, a loud and raucous environment that’s as much a party as it is a pedestal for hoofed contest. After a game or two you’ll notice people saving these movement bonuses up until the end of the game, and it makes the last third of the game fantastic. In the six player game, four of us had played before and most people knew what they were doing before it came to their turn. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Long Shot encourages you to forge a path through its puzzle without dictating direction (though I recommend forwards for the horses). The other upside to horse ownership is a payday if your nag is in the top three places at the end of the race.If a horse moves because its number comes up, any of the horses with a filled checkbox at the bottom of that horse’s card get dragged along with it. The texture provided by the many ways to earn payouts avoids the problematic social phenomenon of that design where everyone bets on the lead car and hands the win to another player.
