About this deal

The turntable speed is adjustable and maxes out at about 3 RPM. It can be set to rotate in either direction. Its power cord is a bit short and only comes with a USB connection. Various features make the original Revopoint POP one of the best affordably-priced portable 3D scanners available today. It features a single-frame accuracy of 0.2 mm to create highly accurate scans in both precision and texturing scanning modes, a 30 x 30 x 30 mm minimum scan volume to capture small objects, and precision up to 0.03 mm. Scanning the same object several times from different angles is also key in creating a complete model. This isn’t specific advice for using the Revopoint MINI, but for working with any 3D scanner.

The small statue that comes with the Revopoint MINI is most useful for your first scan. Its features and small size makes it an ideal object to use to get a feel for how the device works and what settings you need to use. The dual-axis turntable A230 is a tailor-made accessory for Revopoint scanners. It adopts a 360° horizontal design, approximately 30° vertical angle, and a controlled rotation path for fast point cloud data acquisition. It solves previous issues of incomplete data acquisition or holes caused by improper operations such as ambient occlusion, which greatly improves the scanning quality and efficiency. The difference is too small to select one or the other as unconditionally better than the other, but if you want a slightly faster scanning, opt for the Revopoint POP 2 or MINI. Finally, the Revopoint MINI shines brightest when scanning small, feature-rich objects. It produces superb scans, full of detail suitable for applications such as demanding quality control, measurements, reverse engineering, healthcare solutions, and archiving. The general mesh looked acceptable, and the per-point color looked mostly accurate. This color is applied at the point cloud level, where each point has a color applied to it. This isn’t a photo-realistic way to apply color, and isn’t easily transferred between programs like a textured mesh. Generally, the bigger the objects you intend to 3D scan, the bulkier the scanner gets. So the compact, solid build is fairly expected.The Revopoint Mini has a High Accuracy mode, which creates a dense point cloud that can be easily aligned with other point clouds. One of the features of Revo Scan 5 is the ability to take multiple scans of the same model and align them together to create a mesh. Instead of scanning a model and pausing to reposition, this workflow involves taking several scans at different angles and aligning them together after reducing the number of points. Using this workflow resulted in a clean scan of the included demo model with no holes and a smooth and detailed surface. To test out this workflow, I used a ceramic bunny model that had ideal geometry for FDM 3D printing, including a flat base, limited overhangs, and no small or delicate features. I took three scans: one upright, and one of each side of the model. Using the built-in editing tools in Revo Scan 5, I cleaned up all three scans and aligned them together. This resulted in a very dense point cloud, which isn’t ideal for 3D printing. Bunny’s mesh from the scan Revopoint is also releasing a beta update of its Revo Scan software (ex HandyScan software) for both Windows and Mac users. The main novelty of this version is the possibility for users to set the minimum point distance to 0.02mm for a higher level of detail on the resulting mesh.

As such, you shouldn’t expect to be able to capture all of the details of an object with 0.02 mm precision.

Additionally, Revopoint will showcase the MIRACO 3D Scanner at Booth E01 in Hall 12.1 during Formnext 2023. The POP 2 and the MINI are both affordable structured light 3D scanners, but the POP uses invisible infrared rays while the MINI uses blue light. In a nutshell, infrared light is better for face 3D scanning cases since it doesn’t blind users, while blue light can be more suitable for capturing objects with higher accuracy. Furthermore, blue light is best used indoors whereas infrared light can provide good results both indoors and outdoors. Your experience with nearly any 3D scanner depends on the object being scanned and the preparation you put into the process.
