a b Landsea, Christopher W; Dorst, Neal M (June 1, 2014). "Subject: Tropical Cyclone Names: B1) How are tropical cyclones named?". Tropical Cyclone Frequently Asked Question. United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hurricane Research Division. Archived from the original on March 29, 2015. With a hesitant government dominated by Indonesia’s eternal political elites failing to take a clear stance, supporters of the decision are pursuing their Islamisation agendas with renewed vigour, displaying growing intolerance towards other religions and what they consider deviant Muslim minorities. Extremist and radical exponents of this Islamist bloc receive more international media coverage and scholarly attention than their progressive opponents who are defiantly challenging this reactionary trend. Calling for a true transformation of Indonesian society based on democratic principles and respect for human rights, they insist that this depends on secularisation, religious toleration, and freethinking. Tropical cyclogenesis describes the process of development of tropical cyclones. Tropical cyclones form due to latent heat driven by significant thunderstorm activity, and are warm core. [10] [11] Cyclones can transition between extratropical, subtropical, and tropical phases. [12] Mesocyclones form as warm core cyclones over land, and can lead to tornado formation. [13] Waterspouts can also form from mesocyclones, but more often develop from environments of high instability and low vertical wind shear. [14] In the Atlantic and the northeastern Pacific oceans, a tropical cyclone is generally referred to as a hurricane (from the name of the ancient Central American deity of wind, Huracan), in the Indian and south Pacific oceans it is called a cyclone, and in the northwestern Pacific it is called a typhoon. A subtropical cyclone is a weather system that has some characteristics of a tropical cyclone and some characteristics of an extratropical cyclone. They can form between the equator and the 50th parallel. [41] As early as the 1950s, meteorologists were unclear whether they should be characterized as tropical cyclones or extratropical cyclones, and used terms such as quasi-tropical and semi-tropical to describe the cyclone hybrids. [42] By 1972, the National Hurricane Center officially recognized this cyclone category. [43] Subtropical cyclones began to receive names off the official tropical cyclone list in the Atlantic Basin in 2002. [41] They have broad wind patterns with maximum sustained winds located farther from the center than typical tropical cyclones, and exist in areas of weak to moderate temperature gradient. [41] In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation among scholars with an interest in contemporary Muslim thought for the contributions by Indonesia’s new Muslim intellectuals. The realisation that Indonesians are in the vanguard of a significant rethinking of the place of religion in the present-day Islamic world is helped by the progress in the research on Southeast Asian Islam and resultant corrections of the received knowledge of its place in the context of the wider Muslim world. While in the existing literature this new Indonesian Muslim intellectualism is closely associated with ‘neomodernists’ belonging to the first generation coming of age in the postcolonial era, I propose to regard it rather as part of a discursive development traversing three generational shifts embedded in an increasingly articulate understanding of Indonesia as an integral part of the Muslim world and Islam as a constitutive element in Indonesian culture. These new Muslim intellectuals, who pair an intimate familiarity with the Islamic tradition to an equally solid knowledge of advances in the Western human sciences, are exponents of an emergent cosmopolitan Islam in which the dichotomy between ‘Islam’ and ‘Other’ or the binary opposition ‘tradition’ versus ‘modernity’ collapse. Most recently it has culminated in a generation of articulate young Muslims exploring the possibilities of hybrid forms of ‘liberal Islam’ and ‘post-traditionalist Islam

Cyclonopedia and Materialist Horror - Hermetic Lovecraft, Cyclonopedia and Materialist Horror - Hermetic

But for Lovecraft, notions such as democracy were if anything an even graver and more ridiculous self-delusion than theism: “ The word ‘freedom’, so cherished by Americans, prompted [from Lovecraft] only a sad, derisive guffaw”. 2) This comes directly from his rabid cultural, intellectual and of course racial supremacism – the latter no doubt fuelled in part by the ‘scientific’ racism fashionable in his day, derived from a misinterpretation of that great 19th-century deicide, Charles Darwin, and used to justify imperialism and colonialism around the world. White, upper-class, English-speaking humanity may have represented the pinnacle of our species’ biological and cultural evolution, but that wouldn’t save it; for Lovecraft, it merely allowed it to serve as the perfect victim, whether for nameless extraterrestrial entities in his fiction or for the ‘lower’ races of humanity in his view of the real world. (See Houellebecq for an excellent analysis of this facet of Lovecraft’s psychological make-up, especially in regard to the two years he spent in a poor, ethnically heterogeneous neighbourhood in New York and the effect this experience had on his outlook.) Really, the ‘sexual’ and ‘economic’ aspects of Negarestani’s philosophy-fiction are so abstracted that they don’t, in any substantial way, contravene Lovecraft’s injunction for the horror writer to avoid realism at all costs. Rather, they refer to cosmic principles, in keeping with the overall theme of objectivity and anti-anthropocentrism. Glossary of Meteorology (June 2000). "Cyclonic circulation". Within the North Atlantic Basin, tropical or subtropical storms are named by the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC/RSMC Miami), when they are judged to have 1-minute sustained winds of at least 34 kn (39 mph; 63 km/h). [1] The name selected comes from one of six rotating alphabetic lists of twenty-one names, that are maintained by the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) RA IV Hurricane Committee. [1] These lists skip the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z, rotate from year to year and alternate between male and female names. [1] The names of significant tropical cyclones are retired from the lists, with a replacement name selected at the next meeting of the Hurricane Committee. [1]
